My Mom FINALLY got a Colonoscopy today...Polyps found.

I never thought I would have to visit this forum again.  About 2 years ago I lost my father to Colon Cancer.  He never ever went to get screened, and by the time it was determined that he had Colon Cancer, he was at a Stage IV.

I was on this forum multiple times looking for words of hope and encouragement, which I always found.

Now, I finally convinced my 65 year old mother to get a Colonoscopy and a full check up.  Her check up went fine.  Blood work, rectal, mamogram, pap smear, stool sample, bone density, everything came back fine.

Today she had to go for a Colonoscopy so that the last piece of the puzzle would also come back fine.  It didnt exactly go that way.

The surgeon found 2 polyps.  She removed one and most of the second one, but said she didnt want to fully remove it right now because it was deep and it would cause bleeding. (I was in shock while she was explaining this to me so i didnt fully comprehend why the second one wasnt completely removed.)  The surgeon indicated that both polyps were sent to be tested and we would know next week whether they were benign or malignant.  She said the second one was 2cm in size but that she, "didnt like the shape" as it looked "bad" to her.

While I have been through colon cancer before, I have never dealt with an early diagnosis or anything in the polyp stage before.

Here is my thinking, even IF it comes back that this polyp is cancerous, I am thinking it will be OK.  I mean that's why it's called a polyp right, because it is caught early?  They only found 2 polyps, all her other tests came back fine,  she has had no symptoms or anything at all.

While this might be nothing it sounds like it is something to me based on her reaction and concern.  So now that I have told myself it is cancer, I am already starting to stage her in my head (bad habit).

It seems early right?  It seems like she will be ok, right?  They will probably just remove the rest of the polyp and some of the colon and thats it right?

I am just once again turning to all of you and  this discussion board to get a little information and comfort.  My last experience with colon cancer left a bad taste in my mouth but i am trying to remind myself that if detected early, it will be fine.

I am 45 had had 1/3 of my colon removed last year for C.Cancer . Yes, they will go back in and remove the rest, they call it "piecemeal" when they take only a little bit @ a time.  I'm very thankful they didn't remove all of it @ once.  I lost 60% of my blood after my colonoscopy b/c my gastro removed my big cancerous ones and sent me home:(  I am praying for your mother:)

From what I have read 2cm is about the size of a quarter. Usually, about 4cm is when most polyps will start turning into cancer. I have lived with 8 inches of colon since I was 16 years old and I will soon be 50. I wish your mother a complete and very fast recovery. Also, since both your parents have had polyps/colon cancer you should be checked. I have an inherited disease Familial Polyposis. Please get yourself checked out.

Hi,  I am sorry about your Dad; and now having to go through this with your Mom.

The number one thing here, is for you to have a colonoscopy because this can be hereditary.

I was told there are two types of polyps; the ones that grow up on a stem like a mushroom.....the other one lays flat and it is the one that can be precancerous.

Twenty two years ago, I had the flat polyps and eighteen inches of my colon was removed.  Mine was just caught in time!

Stay positive and stay on top of this.

Prayers and blessings,

B
