Hello. My boyfriend of 9 years has just been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the jaw. He is a two time kidney transplant recipient and has been through so much from age 13 to now 45. He is getting a feeding tube Wednesday and a port sometime soon. They don't want to operate. He will have 35 treatments of radiation and one day a week chemo. He is already in a lot of pain due to the location of the tumor and is really depressed. I am trying to make him feel better but I too am scared and unknowlegable about any of this. Is there anyone out there that has had something similar. How do we keep from walking around with a ticking clock above our heads. I want to be the best supporter I can be. Please help. He doesn't smoke or drink and the kidney is doing well.

Hello, I had the same cancer, stage 3 on my tonsils and the base of my tongue. I went through radiation and chemo too. The radiation (35 treatments) did some damage in my neck, destroyed my left vocal cord and burnt a bunch of good cells along with the bad. I'm 4 months out of my treatments, cancer free but still cant swallow anything, not even my own saliva. Dr told me it could take up to 3 years before I can eat again and get rid of this peg tube. Hope its not that long but it's what i can exspect. Hope your boyfriend deals with it better than i did/am. Its the worst thing i've ever been through. I want to eat and drink something so bad i cant stand it, sick of this tube. The best advice i can give is to just have paitence, more than i have, It's a long road, but he will be fine. It will take it's toll on you as well, just like it has with my wife. Don't think i could've made it without her so be strong, for yourself and him. Hope all gets better for you both!
