Number 5 last night we rushed mom to hospital throwing up non stop and extreme pain OUT OF NOWHERE!!! Her White cells high and her bands are also crazy!! Billirubin was high. A little yellowing going on! So once again a CT Scan showed her stent is blocked.  Today we are going for a MRI to see if they can give her another stent and they are planning on putting a permanent drain to provent any more blockages!!!! This stent only lasted 5 weeks. First one lasted 5 months and then 3 months and now a few weeks. So scared for her. My big question is did anyone have a drain put into there side to drain bile?? I can not find anything on line.  thanks God Bless xo Cathy

I’m sorry to hear about your Mom. My Mom had sepsis from her first stent. Then 2 weeks later had gallbladder attack. Her gallbladder became infected and they placed a drain outside the body.

A interventional radiologist places a tube into the gallbladder and the bile drains into a bag. It’s a bit gross at first (looks like green slime) but we got used to it.

You need to empty the bag 1-2x per day depending on how much its draining. It’s cumbersome to carry around. It’s best to use a safety pin and pin it to her pants. She can shower with it but we always tried to cover it with a plastic baggie and not let the water go directly on the area.

It’s easy to drain and take care of. You’ll get a script for flushes that you’ll use once a day to clean the drain. Don’t be surprised if the drain leaks a bit, especially in the beginning. My Mom’s leaked bile all over her clothes, couch ect a few times. Bile is surprisingly easy to remove from fabric…something I never thought I’d learn!

I’m sure the nurse will show you how to drain and clean it. Hope this helps.

Stacey

Cathy, Sorry to hear your mom (and you) had to experience this.  My husband is still on his first stent (2 yrs now) but in the beginning he had to have a drain put in, and then another procedure to replace that one with a larger one so it wouldn't clog so easily.  He had it for about 2 months, yes it is cumbersone, but we had a velcro strap that kept it pretty tight to his leg. He wore alot of sweatpants.  Had to empty  the bag often in the beginning, and then once to twice a day once it was under control and his billirubin came down. Have to also flush it regularly. I put a waterproof sheet on the bed, because it can leak, and towels on chairs and such around the house.  Once the stent was working and his counts went down the dr removed it.

I really tried to be very matter-of-fact with it in front of my husband so he wouldn't be so embarrassed and scared of it. Although not really pleasant it became part of this new life with cancer.

Praying for you and your mom~  Blessings~ Rose

Cathy,,,,are you kidding, taking away her independence,at her age there is no such thing. It sounds to me like your mom has more love at your house, and I'm sure she is happy. My daughter is putting on a addition to our house,so my husband doesn't have to climb stairs,it's what we all do to make life easier. Did your mom smoke? My husband had a pic line last time he was in hosp. Never under estimate your self you are a GREAT daughter God bless kathy

Kathy, I know my family wants whats best for my mom but they have a funny way of showing it LOL Yes my mom smoked most of her life quit about 8 years ago but when you smoke for over 50 years 2 packs a day it definatly gets you in the end. My mom today said I dont' think the drs know what they are doing I quit smoking and it can't now come around and get me.  I didn't have the heart to say that PC is also caused by smoking. I also use to smoke quit about 18 years ago but also smoked for a good 15 years so scary to think it might one day come and bite me in the A$$.

Happy Fall everyone it is so nice out today go out and enjoy the day :) xo Cathy

Cathy,,,,my husband hasn't smoked in 40 years,so who really knows for sure. He worked for a mold company and probably the fumes didn't help any. The doctors think this cancer will go to his lungs but hasn't thank God,all we can do is hope for the best. Everyone has their own opinions ,but I think you are doing great for your momGod bless kathy

Hi Cathy,

I hope your mom is as comfortable as possible.  It sounds like you are doing a good job at that.

Yes, enjoy the day outside, and everyday.

Thinking of you Cathy.
