Does this mole look like melanoma?

http://s984.photobucket.com/user/kate887/media/image_zpseb02 I've had this mole for a few years now. This summer, my mom noticed it and told me I should get it checked out. I ignored her because the thought of going to the doctor petrified me. However, since then I have been keeping an eye on it to track any changes. It has darkened a lot and has changed colors. I also noticed it is almost peeling or flaking. It's a smaller mole, but it really worries me because this mole looks nothing like any of my other moles. It is also developing small dark brown/almost black "needle point" dots in the vicinity which do not show in this photo as it was taken about a month ago. These dots have shown up in the past 2 weeks. Hormones? I had my GP take a look at it when I went in for an upper respiratory infection. She said it looks funny and took a closer look and said things like "shading" "border split" and "symmetry" which worried me. She also had two other doctors take a look too. I have an appointment for a biopsy this Thursday. I am just hoping for some other opinions to try and ease myself into the news good or bad. What is the biopsy process like? I believe the doctors want to do a punch biopsy. How long until I hear results?

Please, run do not walk to the telephone and make an appt. Fear or no fear, no one can tell you if it "looks" like cancer. The only way they can tell is biopsy. There are as I am sure you know three type of skin cancer. Basal cell, squamous and melanoma.

Most likely this is nothing. But let the dematologist tell you that.

For years I have gone to my primary who has reassured me that the mole I have is not anything to worry about. My sister has invasive melanoma so I asked for a referral to a dermatologist for a head to toe once over and I did get it.

She says, I cannot tell you that this lesion/mole is not cancer so she biopsied it. Two days later, it is squamos cell. That means I have to have surgery to have it removed.

The biopsy, they give you a local, like the dentist does, you feel one little prick, they shave it with a razor like instrumet and off to the lab it goes. You wait, then they tell you.

The waiting is the hardest part.

Hoping only the best for you.

I agree with Marti . . . do NOT delay in having it checked out. Melanoma is a serious cancer as it can readily metastasize to anywhere in your body. The sooner you have this mole dealt with, the better. It cannot be diagnosed from your picture . . . you MUST have it biopsied. Your description of its recent changes are definite causes for concern and determining definitively what it is (i.e. biopsy).

I've had shave and punch biopsies for basal cell, squamous cell (both carcinomas), and melanoma lesions.  A small prick or two for the local (typically lidocaine or xylocaine), and that was it. The punch and shave biopsies needed nothing more than a band-aid afterward. They're very quick. Do NOT delay in having this done. The dermatologist (??) doing the biopsy will be able to tell you what the turn-around time is.

All that said, nothing you say, do or worry about can change what it currently is. Easier said than done, but try to redirect the emotional energy into doing whatever needs to be done expediently and keeping yourself from getting into any procrastination or decision-making paralysis. That's the best you can do.

Best Wishes for best possible outcome!
John

Thank you all! I just got back from the dermatologist and had two moles biopsied-- the one pictured above and also one under my arm. I appreciate all of the support, it was a lot less painful than I expected. I should hear the results by next week.

People there is an easy way to treat that type of moles, at least my doctor said that it it helping and there are no side effects. he shared with me https://www.wartremover.net/wartrol/  and said that here I will be able to find the necessary information here, and that I can read the feedback of people that already used it. I am thankful to the doctor, he was right within few weeks the mole disappeared from my skin, went to a biopsy, and everything was alright. So you can try by yourself to be sure that if you use that ointment you'll fell good.
