Right Shoulder and Neck Pain

I'm sitting here pretty scared right now. I'm 35 years old, non smoker and started having right shoulder and neck pain 6 months ago, no injury that I know of. I saw my doctor about 2 weeks after it started and she told me to ice it and take some ibuprofen for a couple weeks and see her again. I did and the ibuprofen helped a lot but if I didn't take it, it would hurt with movement. She then sent me to Physical therapy and he did all his movement tests and poked around. Told me it's probably my posture and breathing and gave me ways to improve my posture and to work on my breathing and to see him in a month. I went back to him as that didn't help so he gave me exercises to help strengthen my shoulder and neck. That didn't help either. So googling about shoulder and neck pain landed me on pages that said Lung cancer can cause it and I mentioned this to my doctor and she doubts it's that. But.. I'm still very scared!! I have 4 kids, my youngest being 16 months old and I'm terrified it's caused by lung cancer, on top of that my Mother in law was just diagnosed with stage IIIB lung cancer last week!!

Would lung cancer cause shoulder pain that only hurts if I over do it and move my shoulder? I sleep fine and it doesn't hurt when I'm immobile.

I read on a few websites that said, symptom of lung cancer is chest, shoulder, or back pain, which feels like a constant ache that may or may not be related to coughing.

It's not an ache, its more of a pulling/ sore pain sometimes feeling like spasms.

Do you guys have any advice for me, I'm really scared it's lung cancer now.

What is the pain like for you? Was it constant or just with movement? Did it feel like an ache? Most the sites say it's constant and does not get better with rest or position change? I made an appointment to talk to my doctor on Tuesday. I don't have great insurance so I hope they'll approve me for scans!

I had rotator cuff surgery. It sounds a lot like that. You will need an MRI to accurately diagnose that. I wouldn't automatically assume lung cancer. Could be a lot of things, shoulder pain, bursitis, rotator cuff, overuse, especially with the amount/age of your kids. Go tell them you need an MRI. Good luck.

Sue before your rotator cuff surgery was the pain only with movement?

I'm hoping I can get a MRI, my medical insurance is not good at all.

There was more pain with overhead movement but there was achy pain and discomfort even with sleeping, a sort of a dull throbbing pain when my arm was down by my side. Sue

Go get an MRI or CT scan. My Dad, smoker for last 30 years, started exactly the same (but it does NOT mean, you are same), and he got a diagnosis of Non small cell lung carcinoma.

He is taking chemo at this moment. This is my first post on this board, I opened thread thinking there is a solution for his neck issue.

Good Luck

Hello!  I am KimmieAnne and I am living with NSCL Stage 4.

Four months ago I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder.  I suffered severe neck and shoulder pain.  As a result of an MRI ordered by an orthopedic surgeon, it was discovered that I had a major tear in my "supra" muscle.  The tear was so bad that an hour surgery turned into two hours and a couple of screws in the top of my arm bone to re-attach the muscle.

Don't let it go too long...my muscle snapped!

I did have shoulder pain prior to my cancer diagnosis.  However, it was due to a collapsed lung (plural effusion).  I had severe wheezing and difficulty breathing and had felt sick for a long time.  The doctor could tell my lung was collapsed by "thunking" on my back below my shoulder blade.

Sometimes the Internet is scary and there is alot of bad information out there.  Do not stress yourself out.  See an orthopedic doctor for an MRI.

Praying for you.

I have lung cancer! I never had any pain. Pain could mean cancer. However you need to get it checked. Everyone is afraid of cancer. So get your butt to the Dr. Yesterday!
