My wife was dx with sclc on aug 14th 2014 on the 15th she was in the hospital getting her first of 3 doses of chemo giving over 3 days to help with her breathing her left lung is 95% occluded from the tumor it seemed to help some and it has already spread (mets) to her thoracic spine she is now in New Jersey visting her grandchilden and will be 4 weeks late for her next round of chemo, her doctor said they give chemo every 3 weeks  we are both retired nurses and every thing I know about SCLC is most people live less than a year but I retired in 2000 so I'm 14 years behind any new treatment I'm looking for a caregiver discusion group in San Antonio Texas I'm scared to death we will be married 20 years this month and I just need to be able to talk and cry with some people that know what I'm going through.

Thank You

Hi Bob,

I am not a caregiver but I can imagine what you are going through.  I also have extensive sclc.  I was diagnosed May 18, 2014.  My husband took me to ER on a Sunday because I had double vision.  CT and MRI came back with no reason for vision problem but they did find my lung, liver and skull had lesions.  Biopsy confirmed.... I am 54 years old.

I have been given the same "12 months" by three different Oncologists.  What a blow.  We have gone to a Cancer Center that offered a clinical trial that I qualified for.  I choose not to.  I would rather spend my time and energy with my family than running two hours away for these trials.  I, too, have chemo every three weeks, three days in a row.  I am just greatful that I have had no side effects from it.  However, my last chest CT showed it had spread to the bones so I also have a med called Zometa once every 6 weeks.

As hard as it is on me knowing my time is limited, I most regret the effect it will have on my family as I am sure your wife is as well.  Our way of dealing with it is to ignore it as much as possible.  Go on living every day as we always have.  I refuse to let this take over my life while I am still here.  We have made our arrangements, discussed how things are to be then let it go.

My prayers are with you and your family.  I pray God's mercy and love to you all.

Michelle

Wife comes home Friday the 26th of sep on the 28th sunday we are celebrating our 20 year wedding anniversary in the same church we got married in. Then Monday hits 0900 CT scan with contrast of lungs, spine, abd, then Tues back on Chemo X 3 days she only got 1st treatment aug 15 to the 18th and is now over 3 weeks late for her next dose of chemo. I have not seen her since Aug I want to say the 29 I know her hair is gone she says feels ok just slight SOB (Shortness of breathe) I guess we will see what is going on next week. Lets see we have a new granddaughter born Sep 4th wt. was 6 lb.-10 oz. She is a Beautiful little girl that is why my wife is there she helped out alot 2 years ago with the first grandson and her daughter-in-law asked her to come back east to help with this one and nothing or no one was going to stop her. I will post again next week after we see if her SCLC is any place else beside her lungs and spine.

Thank You

BobM.

I thought SCLC only had 2 stages?

I was diagnosed with SCLC Jan 2006 and am still here. I was very sick and frail during chemo but am fully recovered. I get dizzy sometimes and am cold but I beat the odds. I had 5 rounds of chemo. I can't remember how many times I had chest radiation. I think it was 10. And I had PCI in a smaller than the normal srength with 2 extra treatments.

There is hope!
