did anyone get pancreatitis during their PC ?

Hi everyone,

I may have developed pancreatitis, possibly from the radiationtherapy. (we are not entirely sure yet, it may also be that the primary tumor is active again, though no signs of it on the scan, CA 19,9 rose to 600 but CEA was stable)

I was wondering if anyone else (who did not have a whipple) has had this, what they think (or their doctors thought) caused it, how bad was it, did it go away, etc.

Any input highly appreciated.

No, but Annie who is turning 61 on December 1 had acute pancreatitis at the age of 19 and almost died from it.  In 1988, she was gestationally diabetic during the last trimester of pregnancy with my son and in 2006 became a type 2 diabetic and started Metformin.  In 2011 as you may already know, was diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 adenocarcinoma of the pancreas with liver mets.  She is now 39 months post diagnosis.  19 of the 39 months she's been on treatment.  She was NED for about 20 months from May 2012 to January 2014.

Hi Carien. I have been curious about this too. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 PC with mets to her lungs nearly 7 months ago. She has never had any pain but she has these episodes where she gets this nawing feeling in her epigastric region. Sometimes it lasts for a few hours and sometimes it lasts a few days. He has trouble describing it, says it's not painful it's just irritating. Many times it gets more aggravated after eating. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing. She actually just went to see a gastroenterologist on Monday about it. She was worried that her stent was started to get blocked but he said no to that. He insisted that it is pain from her tumor but I am skeptical as it is not pain and it is not consistent.

Hi Carien (and Jess). Pancreatitis is often caused by certain chemotherapy drugs.  I have had it 3 times, but I also had the Whipple procedure.  I have found that grape seed extract and Resveretrol are very helpful with "cooling the fire."  Unfortunately, pancreatitis either needs 3 days in the hospital for intravenous feeding or 5 to 7 days of a highly reduced diet (smoothies only or very little food).  Ask the doctor if some of the chemo drugs are known to cause pancreatitis and see if they can be switched out.  Good luck.

@ Bob: I did not know it could also be caused by chemo. thank you for that. However, I did not get any chemo since July 2013. Could this be such a late side effect 14 months after ?
There are cases described in which chronic pancreatitis developed, most likely from radiationtherapy. In that case I dont think it will come to flushing in the hospital, but then your pancreas will just deteriorate more and more......

@ Jess: what you describe can be tumor activity itself. Before I was first diagnosed (feb 2013) I would have terrible packpains, in the same spots all the time, (right where the bra-band runs, both right and left of the spine), a lot of pain after eating, a bloated feeling (I would even wake up feeling as if I had just overeaten) amongst other complaints. Currently it is a bit different: I have the backpains but not that severe and not all the time, and the place varies sometimes,  I do have the bloated feeling, but not the pain after eating ! (big difference). Unfortunately, the horrible, horrible smelling gas is back.
I also upped my pancrease. (had to double it) Is your mother on pancrease ?

Time will tell if in this case its the tumor getting active again, pancreatitis, or a combinaton of both. Neither of the possibilities is really good news of course :)
