Hi Everyone,  I have been diagnosed with throat cancer related to the HPV 16 virus. I have run the gamment of emotions but yesterday took the cake. I went in for my simulation....where the make your mask...total panic attack. Now I am so scared I won't be able to go through with treatment. I felt like I couldnt breath. They gave me adivan to get through the simulation part. Has anyone else had such and experience and if so how did you handle going in for daily radiation treatments. Please....any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I am so afraid I can't get past the panic.

Thanks

Hi CheyenneMoon

Sorry to haer about cancer. I was stage 4B Bottom of tongue-HPV 16

Yep the mask was hard I was very clausterphobic.  I was also fitted with mouthpiece to hold down my tongue which made it suck even more. You will get through it. We all did and you will too.

I drove everyday for treatments all 35 of them. You will handle it because you have to. You may not like it but you will do it because you will make youself mentally strong enough to do it. Take the adivan about one half hour before you go in-take two if you want. they should let you listen to music or whatever you want. It only takes about two to four minutes to set you up and the treatments only take a few minutes. They are Pros they want you out just as fast as you want out. Just try and think of something when they put mask on. It does getA LITTLE EASIER. Good luck

I had a very simular experience with the mask and for the first week just put up with it. Then I told the doctor I couldn't breath while having treatment and he cut out the nose portion and that really helped. Try any means possible as the doc was always asking what he could do to make this a little more pleasent.

Cheyenee is on the right path - putting her mind in a better place.  By far the worst for me was being strapped to the board knowing I couldn't move.  Thinking about my Dad and how he would have been even though we shared severe clautrophobia got me through it motionless - which is so important when targeting a small area with radiation.

I'm waiting to see how your first treatment was yesterday.  I prayed throughout the day that all went well for you.

Some doctors also prescribe Zyprexa to cope with cancer anxiety. Important to remember you can not drive while taking Ativan and most likely the same with Zyprexa. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Ask the hospital if they have a van service, some do, that can bring you to and from your appointment. The state where I live, driving under sedatives is the same as driving under the influence. If the hospital does not have such a service their are religious organizations that have volunteers that can help also. Good luck and remember we are all in the same boat. It is not easy but you will get through it. Several survivors have told me you get used to the mask after a few times and then it is no big deal. Life is precious and worth fighting for! You are stronger than you think!!!! Good luck and keep sharing your feelings. The more you share the less of a burden it will be. God bless.

Hi Mike

I guess the laws would be driving under the influence. But I drove to all my treatments. I have a huge tolerence I guess because it never effected my driving abilities or so I thought.

Hi Everyone -

Cheyenne  had her first treatment on Monday and a PEG tube inserted yesterday.  She is scheduled for one chemo a week and daily radiation with ethiol shots before each treatment.  She was going to eat and go to bed after writing this morning as she is completely wore out which we all can understand.

At this point what she needs from us more than anything is emotional support.  She has asked a lot of excellent questions and they have been answered honestly via private emails.  Our cancer is curable and although the treatment is rough we all made it through and Cheyenne will too!

I feel for you. My 35 treatments under the mask were anything but fun. Are you self hit gnosis and force myself to relax. I had a couple of small panic attacks but I made sure they put a very high-pressure fan to circulate air on me and play loud rock 'n roll and it really helped.
