White Paste in my Mouth

Hiya Gang,

My last radiation was 10/3/14.  After that I "cooked" for awhile, and then I really started doing well.  Got my feeding tube removed, gain back about 15 of the 20 pounds I had lost, and was depressed less each day.

About a week ago I developed this white paste in my mouth and a lump in my throat.  I thought I had thrush, so I went to the doc (my regular GP) this past Thursday (1/15/15) and told her what I thought.  She did not do a culture or anything, but prescribed Diflucan (1 pill a day for 3 days) and Nystatin Oral Suspension swish and swallow 4 times per day for 7-10 days.

You guessed it - today is Sunday and I see no change.  Tomorrow is the holiday, so I'll have to wait until Tuesday to contact either her or my ENT.

My question to you is, has anyone had this white paste coating your mouth and what did you do to get rid of it?  As you may have guessed, everything tastes like crap again, so I've got no appetite.  I desperately want to eat again, but this paste is killin' me.

Thanks gang.

Certainly sounds and looks like thrush - they don't usually take cultures but can make a good assessment just on a visual. It's one of the typical side effects of radiation and due to dry mouth. The good bacteria disappear along with the saliva.

If the diflucan didn't work, there are other medications, including lozenges, that can be used. Do get in touch with your ENT or even you dentist and let them know the diflucan didn't work.

You might also head down to local pharmacy now and pick up an antifungal OTC rinse. Ask your pharmacist - they're terrific resources when it comes to OTC or prescription meds. Use the rinse until you can get to the doc.

If you're eating, try to stay away from sugar. Get some Greek style yogurt - not with the sugary fruit - and swish it around your mouth. Not a bad snack either if you can get it down.

If you're feeling a lump in the throat, could be the thrush traveled down a bit. Not to worry - proper meds will take care of that too.

Not life threatening but should be taken care of.

After it's treated and gone, keep your mouth as clean as possible. Brush your teeth with asodiumfluoride toothpaste and get yourself a non-alcohol mouth rinse. In fact, the doctor can get you a prescription for a high potency sodium fluoride toothpaste that you can brush on at night and leave it on - don't rinse it out. One of the biggest threats will be cavities and broken/chipped teeth - they get weak again because of the lack of saliva and good bacteria.

Nothing that can't be handled with some extra attention and determination. They give those qualities out at the treatment center too, yes? :)

Onward!

Rinse with raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar; vinegar is a potent anti-fungal and bacteria killer. It will knock that thrush right out of there and it's cheaper than diflucan. You can but it at an grocery store. I get mine at Walmart.

sorry you are having problems-it most likely is thrush. Diflcan worked for me along with salt and baking soda rinses

Thanks for the replies.  It is Thrush.  I went to my ENT and he prescribed the same stuff and my regular doc, but said I should take it for 30 days - and to not expect results after only 3 days.  So, take the 2 meds, stay hydrated, and aggressively brush my tongue was his advice.

I'm going to try the vinegar and see if that won't help expedite getting rid of this stuff.

Thanks again for all the support.

After I finished my radiation July 2010...I experienced the same "white paste" in my mouth and throat.  Biotene seemed to help some.

I still after 4-1/2 years get it from time to time.

Hi Bugsy,

A few drops of "oil of oregano" in water - swished around the mouth and swallowed works amazingly well for thrush.  (twice a day)  Also, it has so many healthy benefits as well - is really a win-win.

Tastes strong but is worth it.

All the best,

Sarah

Bugsy -

If you do use the vinegar, pick up a brand from the local health food store. Make sure it's the one with the "mother". Bragg is a well known brand...
