I was stage 3 had chemo/rad/surgery a year ago. 90% of re-ocurrences happen in the first 2 years. I am always worried in the back of my mind especially before a scan, you think every little ache or pain might be something. its tough I know but you really just need to concentrate on living your life and getting back to as normal a routine as possible.

I figure I made it this far which is further than many others with this disease do and I am thankful for it.

Excersize, eat right, live a healthy lifestyle and know you are doing everything you can. Enjoy life , live in the moment and be grateful every day.

So not many people pass esophageal cancer stage 3?? I am kind of nervous for I just got dignaosed with that two weeks ago and will have doctor's meeting on Wed and Thurs, discussing about treatments for my cancer? I can't even eat but can swallow water so far kind of new in here

The 30th of Mar 5 years ago is when I was diagnosed stage 3 esophageal cancer. I received chemo Mon-Fri in a fanny pack along with radiation mon-fri this was for about 4 months. My surgery was on the 5th month. I had a full esophojectomy and they removed all the limphnodes around the area. In August it will be 5 years cancer free. The chemo was a very aggressive type. I was actually able to enjoy the weekends without the chemo fanny pack. My prayers go with you. Eating after the surgery has been and still is the biggest adjustment. Also it would be nice if I could put on about 15lbs. At the begging I weighed 235 after surgery I weighed 155 and haven't been able to get over 160.

I am wondering is your husband still continuing to be on maintenance dose of herceptin.  How long he had to do herceptin? And was it along with chemo combination?

Congratulations on being cancer free. Your husband is a big hope and inspiration to people on this forum

He is not on maintenance herceptin. He had 5 treatments with the drug and it was in combination with other chemo drugs. Stay strong, think positive and prayers are powerful! After esophojectmy - 4 years later - he is having a lot of acid reflux and spends most nights sleeping in recliner. Anyone else experience this and what did u do for it? Long term proton pump inhibitors are good for you.

Foundation Medicine -http://www.foundationmedicine.com/

They provide genetic testing of the tumor and targeted therapy for patients. They may have something else to offer.

- Foundation medicine has another useful site -

My husband was diagnosed with Stage III esophageal cancer in Nov 2014. He completed his chemo/radiation and had his surgery. He is still very sick from the surgery however as soon as he starts to feel better, we are very seriously considering Gerson Therapy or any other integrative therapy. Below are some resources:

- Dr. Keith Block - Integrative Oncologisthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWXmDVaDaFI

I hope these resources provide some help.

Hi Sunshine,

There is a good quality of life after being diagnosed with stage 3. My husband was diagnosed in 2011. He couldn't have radiation because of radiation to treat previous cancer in 1985. He did have chemo followed by esophagectomy in Jan 2012. He did have a positive lymphnode 9/12. It was a node that was positive and they thought the chemo had resloved it. He was then treated with radiation directed only at the node concurrently with a new chemo. His treatment ended 12/12. He worked throughout this time except for 7 weeks after the surgery. We are grateful for every day we have together, We travel and have fun. This is a difficult journey but it is worth your perseverance.

Best to you,

Tracy B. (wife of Steveb50)

I just had surgery for stage 2B esphogas cancer 17 days ago, but did not get chemo before the operation since they thought it was barely a 2 before the operation and did not know it was a 2B till after. Is your husband doing okay after today? How soon after his surgery was he able to eat solid foods? Did they give him any idea on if it would re-occur?
