Wow...I can't believe eating before and during the night actually helps with the acid reflux?  Especially some with acid like apples.  If anyone else eats or drinks before bedtime i would love to hear from you as I have the same type of problem.

For the first few months after my feeding tube was removed I pushed all the limits of my eating. I ate everything, enormous quantities as well, I ate 5 minutes before bed and many nights forgot to elevate myself.

I didn't have a single incident of reflux or aspiration. I was beginning to think everything my Dr. told me was exaggerated. Boy was I wrong. That or something changed radically.

When I started to follow the protocol (I was feeling lethargic and down so figured perhaps the official way would resolve things.) the reflux and aspiration started. It's awful. I got reflux 2x a month and had to sleep perfectly upright or had big problems.

Now I'm in between. I still eat before bed, any and everything, sleep barely elevated when on an empty stomach, and have a mild reflux 1x per month average.

I found one important change. I take my 20mg pariet before bed instead of in the morning. That made a huge difference in going all night without being disturbed.

I’m a year and a half post surgery. I get reflux about once every other month and it’s usually because I did it to myself. I know what foods and amounts I need to avoid but at time I just can’t help myself. I do the popcorn thing about 4 times a week. The microwave 100 calorie type are the ones I eat. If I don’t do the popcorn a handful of saltine crackers seems to work for me also.

Yup! I am 11 years post esophagectomy. Have had bile reflux off and on since. I used to think that it was best to sleep with an empty stomach but I now believe that I am better with a full stomach. My reflux is not food but it is bile, foul tasting, burning thick yellow bile. I think the bile comes up easier when it doesn't need to get past food in the stomach. I am eating dinner later and always eat an apple just before bed. It has been working for me.

I am 8 yrs post esophagectomy and didnt experience  much reflux until i had revisional surgery in 2017 . Since then ive had at least two episodes a week with vomiting bile and food. I've aspirated and have developed a reflux cough. I've tried everything i've seen on here but nothing has worked  so i am hoping the apple before bedtime will do the trick.  Thank you for this hint.

I am four years post surgery. In the first year I had two incidents at night, about two days apart. Last week I had another at night. I was lucky to wake up promptly so there wasn't too much burning. I am hoping that it doesn't happen for another four years or more!

This last one for me wasn't too bad. The thing is there are people who have never had EC and struggle with this problem. So I don't know if in my case it would happened even if I had never had EC and the surgery. All in all I have a pretty normal and happy life.

The thing is you need to differentiate between acid reflex [food] and bile reflex. Acid reflex isn't too bad but bile reflex is horrible.
