What to expect at 1st oncology appt?

My mom just had her tonsils removed with a T1N2c classification, Stage 4a. How terrified should I be with this diagnosis? I want to be realistic and understand what we're dealing with. (I know everyone responds differently to treatment.) She meets with an oncologist on Monday. What can we expect? The ENT said she will receive radiation and chemo. I believe she will receive radiation daily for 6+ weeks. I seem to have so many questions, but not sure where to start. Thanks for any info. Just trying to stay positive, but also realistic. She doesn't want to know anything, yet she's terrified of the unknown. I on the other hand feel one of us should have details and be "in-the-know." Thanks again.

Dear DL, this website has a lot of supportive folks who have experienced what your mom is going through. Repost your question under "head and neck cancer" and you will receive guidance. It will be a rough journey for you and your mom but the two of you will make it. My husband is 15 mos. post tonsillectomy/rad. neck surgery for left tonsilar cancer with lymph node involvement. He is 11 1/2 mos. post rad/chemo. trtmt. and is doing well. There will be lots of advice provided by other posters under the other category. We will be there for you and your mom!

Did they tell you if the cancer was HPV positive? If so that's a good thing. HPV+ cancers have a much better cure rate and prognosis than HPV- oropharyngeal cancers.

I have not heard HPV mentioned, but it's on my list of questions to ask tomorrow. Thank you:)

Daisy,

After a biopsy it sometimes takes the HPV status longer to come back than the cancer diagnosis.  I got mine the next week.  Knowing that will help doctors finetune the treatment and prognosis.
