Hi! My mom is currently doing chemo for stage lV signet ring cell carcinoma. Her first diagnosis was in December 2012. She had surgery feb 2013 followed by six months of chemo. We found out July 2016 that it is back. She has a mass up against the stomach wall too close to a main artery for surgery. She is in chemo again, hoping to follow up with radiation. I am absolutely terrified. Does this treatment work? Where in the us is most qualified for this highly aggressive cancer? Help please!

Hi,

in many cases, recurrence of tumor is a possibility.  Even if we do radiation and chemo, still there is a possibility, especially of colon or rectal cancer.

There are not many options other than the standard chemo medicines like Oxaliplatin,Folfox 4, Ironitecan, Cetuximab,     Avastin, etc the last two are very costly and used as a targetted therapy along with other  chemo drugs.

When it is stage IV, total cure is not possible, but it can be contained through chemo and radiation.  However, it all depends upon the patient's helath and tolerance level and especialy financial capacity.  Above all when in stage IV, the patient needs, your family's emotional support and personal care, empathy and most importantly, Paliative care and pain management.

Pl discuss with your oncologist all these aspects and proceed cautiously.  Pray for you mom's speedy recovery.

Fortunately other than her chemo week she feels great! She is still working and going about life as usual. She does not go online and look things up which I guess is a blessing. I have and I know how agressive her cancer can be and it scares me. As useful as the Internet is sometimes it can be devastating.

You should see if you can find a medical team with experience in treating Signet Ring Cell (SRC).  Unfortunately, this type of cancer cell is very aggressive as you've found out and chances of recurrence and metastatic spread are high.

Having metastatic spread is definitely not a good situation.  But it is most certainly not a death sentence either.  There are instances of many who were diagnosed initially as Stage 4 or has recurrent/metastatic disease who have been viewed as cleared as they've crossed over that magic 5 years NED threshold.  While I want to be realistic with your mom's situation and not being a medical doctor or knowing the entire medical history of your mom, there is some hope.  But I won't kid you that your mom is in for some challenges based on what you've posted so far.

If you want to see those who are/were Stage 4 or with recurrent/metastatic disease who have been declared NED/cured, there is a web site where many of these same individuals are still very active.  Just do a Google search for colon club forum.  It'll be the first hit on the list.
