My heart goes out to you.  I am so very sorry.  Chemo is generally done first before surgery.  I have a good friend who is battling liver cancer and she is doing quite well on some of the new chemo drugs that are out.  She survived Ovarian cancer about 7 years ago and then it came into the liver on her 5th year after the first battle.   Two years and she is still going good.    Pray and try to keep strong.  New drugs come out every day. Many on the board will be praying for your hubby (Carl) and for you.   Miracles still happen, let's pray for one for you guys.

I was stage 3 the first time and it only hit one node and did not travel, so I can't answer for that. But I did want to give my prayers to your husband as well as you. Medicine has come a long way and love is a very strong weapon as well. I pray for a great outcome and if you or your husband wish to talk, this is a great place. Eric

My Husband, 47 years old has been also diagnosed with esophagus cancer stage 4 in November. He has started his first chemotherapy on 24th November. We were devastated with the news, in particular we have two young children.

His treatment is EOX, he already had three and then they will do CT Scan to see the outcome.

Hope everyone with cancer will cure soon.

Kathy, my husband, like yours was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer. We discovered his liver had large tumors, as well as several small tumors. They recommended pallative care to keep him comfortable. We were not ready to quit. That was almost four years ago. No one has a crystal ball. Don't give up just because it is a tough cancer. I wish you and your loved ones well. God Bless

Don't panic (lol who doesn't initially). I sympathize with your husbands plight and pray for you all. Long story short get a second opinion to help you make decisions. I had EC and had neo-adjuvant chemo/rad then waited the appropriate "cook time" then had the Ivor Lewis robotic method for removal of the GEJ and 18 lymph nodes. My ec was HER2 positive make sure they test it for there is another drug to control it. HER2 makes ec hyperactive. Surgery was June 1st went back to work Aug15th and had my for first post "cure" cat scan only to reveal the ec had metasized to my liver and lungs courtesy of HER@ positivity. Now I'm back to chemo only with Herceptin to control HER2. new cat scan on Feb 2 hoping for shrinkage. HER2 suppression is long term. This disease is very aggressive so investigate, ask questions and go to it. BTW I  am 52 now with a 17 and 13 year old so Iam trying my damndest to stay around for a while...Jeff

I found out I was Stage IV after an EGD that was supposed to be used for dilating my esophagus to improve my swallowing. I started chemo within 3 weeks and responded very well. I was able to swallow again withing 2 weeks and my lymph nodes cleared. That was almost 2 years ago. My first course of chemo (6 cycles) included epirubicin, oxaliplatin, and oral Xeloda pills. Later I did a 25 day course of radiation. Around July 2016 I received Taxol and Cyramza. I still have it but holding it at bay.

hang in there. as others have said, new medicines come out every day. I'm 62 and was diagnosed 16 months ago with stage IV esophageal cancer with mets to the liver as well. I'm on Folfox every 2 weeks and while I'm not complaining, I feel pretty good. I just finished my 35th round and ct scans show big improvements over those shown at the onset of this disease. Though this is a very agressive cancer, it can be beaten. there are long term survivors of this. I will pray for you and your husband. keep your chin up and stay positive.

Bob
