Hey Marc, I am a 12 year survivor of Stage IV, SSC of right tonsil with lymph node involvement. I've had a bunch on scares over the years, which all turned out to be nothing. The thought and fear of recurrence has never gone away, although it is WAY in the back of my mind now. I've also had other, unrelated cancer scares. A scare is a scare, but at this point they are totally manageable.  One of the things I r...

Yearly Update: Just to give a lttle hope to the folks and families who are new to this site, I like to check in from time to time with a progress report. I had Stage IV SSC of the right tonsil with 4 node involvement. IMRT to both sides (8 fields), Cisplatin, 5FU, mask, feeding tube, swallow therapy, etc., etc... That was 11years ago! The past 11 years have been the very best of my life, not only because my cancer ex...

I hope your doctor told you that the weeks right after treatment ends may be the worst. Your body is still cooking from the radiation. Took me a couple of months to get rid of that.

Wow, I'm glad to hear the newbies are doing well and my posts have a little bit of a positive effect. BTW...I'm not doing good, I'm doing GREAT!!!! 61 years old, hit the gym 5 days a week, 15 miles of jogging/week, 180 push ups/day (sets of 30...I'm not Superman), etc... If I may suggest to all that are able, start or continue some sort of exercise regimen after treatment. Doesn't have to be Navy SEAL training, but d...

Hi Evonne, Of course you're nervous/scared. This diagnosis sucks and you've got a few rough months ahead, but it's definitley doable and, if you keep your spirits up you'll have a long and happy life ahead. I am 7 1/2 years out of treatment for StageIV SCC. Life is better for me now than it was before diagnosis. I now appreciate all the little things in life that I overlooked or took for granted. For me that is wort...

Hi Bill, I started with ice cream then progressed to eggs. Everything tasted horrible for a few months but I forced it down. My body had forgotten how to swallow and chew as I hadn't even attempted it for about 5 months. Had about a month of practice and then the PEG fell out when I was carrying a basket of clothes into the laundromat. It was pretty funny actually! Luckily it was my wife that found it and not one of...

Hey Bill, Yes, but it is totally manageable. It's my new normal and after 8 years I can't remember it being any different. I've had the Heimlich a few times (my wife's getting good) and I have to choose my food carefully. I can't eat meat which is no great loss. Seafood, vegetables, and fruit are no problem so it has actually made my diet a lot healthier. I was on the PEG for 6 mos during treatment. It took a coupl...

Hi All, I check in here on the board about once a year or so to put my 2 cents in and hopefully give some of the newbies on here a bit of hope. I know this is a scary and dark time for you and your loved ones (if you're lucky enough to have any), but there is hope. My story is exactly like many of you here - diagnosed with Stage IV SCC of the right tonsil, lymph nodes were involved. I received the customary 7 weeks...

Puppers, Sorry to hear your family is going through this. There is a much greater chance that your mom doesn't have cancer so don't worry until you know for sure (easier said than done, I know). Hopefully,  I can offer you some hope with my story (highly abridged). I was diagnosed in 2005 at 53 with Stage IV Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the right-tonsil. The treatments were difficult (putting it mildly) but they...
