Jeyereh, I would do surgery first. Because I had the surgery the radiation was done at a lower dose and only on one side. I feel because if this my side effects were not as bad, and they were bad. I didn't need a feeding tube because I was able to swallow without any pain. Everyone handles things differently, I'm glad I did things the way I did. I hope this helps you and umy our husband. Dawn

Let me clarify, not all will be from HPV, some are related to smoking and drinking.  When the doctor tells you that your cancer is from HPV you can safely assume it is related. Having HPV is not a conduit in treating your cancer, what they mean is the HPV RELATED cancer has a very positive response to treatment.

Sorry Diana, but the cancer is caused by HPV, strain HPV16 to be exact. It's squamous cell carcinoma due to HPV16 virus.  HPV lives in and transmitted throughthe epithelial surface (squamous cell), the strain HPV16 is most commonly found in these cancers.  They are directly related. Hello, I am 13 months post treatment for stage 4 tonsil cancer from HPV. I had a left radical neck dissection (removed my tonsil and 41 lymphnodes ) before treatment. The incision looked worse than the pain. However, the throat was painful upon swallowing. The pain lasted 10 days exactly, even ice cream was painful to eat.  I did have 38 radiation treatments and 3 rounds of chemo after surgery. However, becaus...

Hello, First advice is to get a second opinion.  I had an enlarged lymph node on the left side.  Went to my primary care physician who was 99% positive it was not cancer. She ordered a CT scan just to be sure.  The CT showed some worry some activity but never said cancer, just further study.  I was referred to an ENT, who looked at and felt my tonsil.  He did not see any enlargement and felt...

According to my radiation oncologist he was going to radiate both sides but changed to just my left at a lower dose of radiation. But he upped the amount from 35 to 37. I have been ok so far aside from food tasting horrible and thick disgusting mucous. I did not have a feeding tube put in as the dr. Felt I would not need it. I am so scared of the sore throat happening thus causing more problems with my eating.  ...

Hi Gary,  I have stage IVa tonsil cancer HPV related.  I am on my 19 radiation tx (out of 37) and finished my second round of chemo (cisplatin) out of three rounds. My rounds are given 3 days in a row every 21 days. My question to you is how was your chemo administered and was it cisplatin?

Hello, I am a 48 year old who was diagnosed with Stage IV tonsil cancer HPV type. I found a lump in my neck on the left side. Was told it was a brachial cleft cyst. Had surgery and biopsy at the time o surgery and was given the all clear...no cancer. Yay!! One week later receive the dreaded phone call from the ENT stating there was a further pathology done on the mass they removed and it came out positive for cancer. I had to go back to surgery for a left modified neck dissection. I had 49 lymph nodes removed and only one had came out positive for cancer. 6 weeks later (December 16, 2014) I was going in for my 38 radiation treatments and 3 rounds of cysplatin. I am now 3 months out of treatment, starting to get my taste back and thankful I didn't need a feeding tube. Had a CT done a couple of weeks ago which came out all clear. No Evidence of Disease!!
