I often thought the same way and I am 48 years out.  However, I learned that no doctor can tell you what your long term side effects will be.  It's like watching those TV commercials for drugs.  When they read off the possible side effects, who would want to take them?  But the treatments do help MOST people.  The amount of radiation I was given is now considered excessive, but to stop and r...

Hello, Sister58! Your post about your brother's experience with large amounts of radiation caught my eye.  Forty-eight years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsil when I was only 22 years old.  I was given 6,000 rads of radiation, an amount that is considered double of what they give for the same cancer today.  Keep in mind that radiation treatments  were still new for head and neck canc...

Bob and Diana, I just read back on this thread - after I responded to your post Diana. I too have always given credit to God for my survival.  Three years ago, I retired from 25 years of ministry in religious education.   I have worked with children of all ages but am mostly drawn to troubled teens.  I pray that some of them will find God's strength when faced with difficulties in lif...

Hi Diana! I can't say that I have ever had any kind of tingling sensations.  I would think a radiologist or good head and neck specialist might be able to give you an answer. Personally, I would not be concerned about tingling.  One of my doctors told me that painis an indication that something is wrong. Best of luck to you.  Will keep you in my prayers. Gerry

Hello Bob and friends! I was just reading this thread and wanted to add a few comments on the subject.  I was diagnosed with tonsilar cancer in 1970 at the age of 22.  I was given 6,000 rads of cobalt therapy in my face and neck.  I could write a book on the long range side effects that I have experienced over these 45 years since, but the best advise I can give to anyone is to keep fighting and, if ...

Hi Jenna! I just found this trend and read your post from last August. Our stories are very similar in many ways.  I am 45 years out and still cancer free. I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on my left tonsil in 1970 when I was 22 years old. In those days there were not many options for treatments, so I was given 6,000 rads of cobalt radiation therapy.  I was treated at a hospital in Brookl...
