I'm looking for information related to treating an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) as a result of radiation treatments I underwent to treat my SCC just over 4 years ago.   I've been taking Levothyroxine for about 4 years now to replace the thyroid hormone my body is no longer able to produce.  Despite my blood work being right where it should be, I'm still experiencing some severe symptoms http://mayo...

You really can wonder given the brutal effects of the treatment.  By the time I finished treatment I had lost a total of 52 pounds and resembled an escapee from the gulag.  I feel good at this point and other than having to deal with some lingering effects resulting from the treatment, all is well. Keep hanging in there!

Kathy I just passed the 4.5 year mark and looking forward to hitting the 5 year mark in December.  Good luck with the scan results next week!

Mel, I know right where you husband is at because I was in a similar spot during treatment.  I would be lying to you if I said it will get better from here because he still has 2+ weeks to go.  From what you described his treatment plan is 6-7 weeks of radiation with Chemo at the beginning of weeks 1, 3 & 6.  And based on the amount of nausea you describe, I suspect that Cisplatin is the chemo med...

I would like to get the thoughts from the group about this topic, especially those who are nearing or past the 5 year mark.  On 6/3/13 I will hit the 4 year 6 month mark.  I just met with my onc yesterday for my semi-annual visit and we were discussing a final CT scan at the end of this year when I hit the 5 year mark.  I'm debating the benefits to doing this scan.  I have absolutely no indication...

Mel675 That does mean he has a stage 4 cancer, as mine was. Head and neck cancers are typically stage 4 when discovered because of lymph node involvement.  Not to worry you but I also don't want you to be mislead.  The effects of the treatment will become more severe throughout the course of his treatment.  Even after his course of radiation treatment ends he will still be in the "cooking" stage ...

Larry, Sorry to hear the news but know that it's treatable.  My 2008 dx was stage 4 HPV SCC in the right tonsil and base of the tongue.  Treatmemt was surgery followed by chemo and 35 trips into the radiation machine (tomotherapy).  I was surprised that the recommended course for you was 6-7 full weeks for a stage 2 cancer.  My only recommendation would be to get a 2nd and maybe a 3rd opinion wit...

Erin I was treated with Tomo along with chemo from Jan-March 2009.  I put together a blog during the experience which can be read here.  http://tlangford.blogspot.com/  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out through the message board. Tony

"The Man" is back!!  Oudave, good to hear from you again.  And fortunately for me, it has not been 4.5 years since you've been on the site.  I just passed the 4 year mark of my DX and you were still quite active on the board during my treatment and first year of recovery.   What a joy it was to read your posts and especially to receive them.  You definitely have a way of lifting spirits arou...

Lost my taste and everything felt like it had a cardboard-like texture.  I'm almost at the 4 year mark of my diagnosis and my sense of taste has come back nicely. Can't tolerate the spicy (heat) to well but I can deal with that. Hopefully the following will give your sister a bit of a boost!
