Hi there... I'm so sorry you are all going through this - My husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ampullary cancer 11 years ago (I've posted his story on this blog in the past..)  Since he was Stage 4 he was considered inoperable, so at that point chemo was our only option - At this point John's CA19-9 was extremely high and he was losing weight rapidly - his original oncologist had given us about 8 month surviva...

Hi Guys - Just a quick update - I have been thinking about you all and wanted you to know that John celebrated his 8th year cancer free last August!! :-)  He no longer gets CT scans or has f/u appts at UCSF -  He is still going strong and we are both keenly aware how blessed we have been...Without Dr. Ko and the UCSF trial with the combination of gemcitabine (Gemzar) and capecitabine (Xeloda), I do not beli...

John had a combination of Gemzar and Xeloda - He would receive an infusion of Gemzar, then start taking a high dose of Xeloda for seven days, and then he would be off for a week - I believe he had 12 treatments in all...He was fortunate and did not have any side effects other than fatigue and nausea with both medications...He is six years cancer free this month!  Has your Dad tried either of these medications?&n...

My husband had success with a clinical trial using a combination of both Gemcitabine and Capcitabine.  A Whipple was not an option for him as by the time he was staged he was already at IV with liver metastases....He has not had any recurrence and his CA19-9 remains steady at 13.  He will have his final five year check-up in August....I'm a big believer in chemo - I will pray for your success!
