We just got the devasting news of a recurrence in regional lymph nodes (thankfully, all organs are clear) - my 47 yr old hubby and father of 3 children between 9 and 21 years of age.   This has occured nearly 4 years following seemingly successful treatment (neoadjuvent chemo + radiation + esophagectomy) for (initially diagnosed) locally advanced T3N0 EC with clean surgical margins and negative nodes. ...

Just underwent endoscopic dilation 2 days ago for a stricture that's developed (first need for dilation since the esophagectomy 3.5 years ago).   Swallowing had become painful and eating solids more difficult in recent weeks.  Anyway, the stricture was dilated 2 days ago, but don't yet feel any relief in the top of the throat area.  How long does it take following an esophageal dilation to get rel...

Others on this site have recommended the Medcline Reflux Relief Pillow;  however, an adjustable bedframe may be your best investment.  My husband couldn't sleep with those wedges ..

oatmeal/hot cereals, cream-based soups (ie cream of broccoli, etc), shakes containing peanut butter (highly caloric) and protein powder, eggs and cheese, high protein liquid drinks, etc.  Insist on immediate CT scan.  The doctors should have acquired a lot of information regarding the extent of the tumor's localized invasion from the endoscopy.   The CT scan will tell them if it has yet spread to ...

Consider seeing a GI doctor who can do an upper endosocpy to rule out EC, if he has any concerns.

yes, hubby experienced bilateral pleural effusions (and pneumothorax) post-esophagectomy.. and no, they weren't cancerous.    If your hubby exercises his lungs (ie walking, deep breathing, etc), the effusions will likely diminish over time as will his shortness of breath (if he's experiencing that ..).

There are so many factors to consider as you're faced with this very, very difficult decision.  I discussed your post with my 47yr old husband (who underwent esophagectomy in May 2015).  Perhaps the most important of these factors to consider are your husband's emotional and physical health heading into the esophagectomy, which will influence your ability to deal with the recovery and its life-altering effe...

I believe palliative means they're treating the symptoms of the disease, but the underlying cancer is not curable.   Please do not think in terms of 6 months or whatever they've told you.  Some people can live for YEARS with palliative care for inoperable stage 4 EC.  Sending strength and positivity your way.

Thankfully no mets. T3N0 has a decently optimstic prognosis, but usually is node-positive at surgery which isn't necessarily visible on scan.  So, if your other complicating conditions aren't contraindicating factors, esophagectomy will likely be where you're headed after chemo and radiation beforehand to strink the tumor.  You should discuss the emphysema as a risk factor for post-op complications, and ask...
