Hi everyone! I'm now 19 months out from treatment for tonsil cancer. Had chemo, rad, peg tube and all the same problems that each of you has/had. No need to comment on what brutal treatment it was! But, I am doing well now, and you will too. I dont quite have the stamina I used to have, but I do ok. Eating is still a challenge at times, and I will never again enjoy the spicy foods I loved, but I have come a long way ...

All of the above messages are very accurate, and very similar to what I experienced. All the doctors told me that head & neck cancers are the worst treatment but the best outcome. I received 35 rads and 3 chemo treatments. I had no life for several months, other than going to the cancer center every day. I was extremely sick and got dehydrated several times, despite having a PEG tube because the formula didnt agr...

I also remember reading about slippery elm tea but I couldnt find it anywhere. I did find (at a health food store) a tea called Throat Coat and it has slippery elm in it. I also bought raw honey at the same store. It did help soothe my throat, though I didnt care for the taste because the tea also has licorice in it, which I dont care for.  As for your question regarding water, I was followed very closely by a ...

Nina, So sorry you are having to go through this. My comment is regarding the time of day to have radiation. I too was planning to schedule radiation treatments late in the day, but my nurses advised me against that. They said that in the event that I would need IV hydration post radiation, if it was late in the day I would have to go to the ER in the next town over. You see, the oncology center closes at 4:30, so an...

Susan, I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad. Cancer surely did affect your family. How wonderful that he went peacefully and without pain- just the way we'd all like to go, no doubt. And even more wonderful that he chose to pass away in his own home. Condolences to you and your family.  Karen

Hello everyone, First the good news, I found out this morning that my 3 month scan was clear!!! I am truly on the road to recovery. Now, I feel sort of "stuck" in this limbo place. I am no longer sick, but I am not well enough to get a job or even do volunteer work. I have been a stay at home mom forever, am now 55 years old, and just before I was diagnosed I decided to try and get back into the work force. I didnt ...

Im 3 months out and having a terrible time with chemo brain. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try fish oil and vitamin B. I play online Scrabble every day to stimulate my brain, a well as a few other brain games. Trying hard to get back into reading, which I have always loved, but my attention span isnt up to par yet. It's a slow process.

Congratulations on your clear scan!!  Looks like we are on the same schedule. I am 12 weeks out from treatment. I have my 3 month scan on Saturday and I'm nervous. I see the ENT on the 6th and will get the results then. Eating has been difficult and is quite a chore but I havent had to use the tube in several weeks, so I'm happy about that. I'm maintaining my weight (after losing 23 pounds) but just barely. My t...

I am 10 weeks out and everything I eat irritates my throat- some things worse than others- but I push through the pain because I wanted to get off the ensures AND I want the peg tube out!!! I found that drinking milk while I eat helps to soothe my throat, and after I finish eating I use the magic mouthwash to help the pain. There are some things that go down easier with less irritation- oatmeal, bananas, smoothies ma...

Gatoruno, Looks like we are on similar schedules. I finished treatment on Feb 3rd, so I am almost 10 weeks out. I am also nervously awaiting my scan on May 2nd. As far as the taste issue, as others have said everyone is different. I keep plugging along trying new things each day. Some things taste good and I can actually swallow them, and then there are total failures. Today I tried to eat a ripe pear but it tasted ...
