My husband had a radical nephrectomy (left kidney with 13mm mass) within 2 months of diagnosis of stage iv rcc, Linda. The surgeon suggested Sutent at that time but the cost was prohibitive and we didn't know about the patient assistance program. My husband was against any chemo drugs after reading too much online about side effects, etc. and pretty much stuck his head in the sand because he felt no different than 'n...

Hi Linda. When my husband was on Sutent in 2012, it was over $9000 in California for 30 days of 50mg. We could never have afforded this or even the co-pay with our private insurance PPO coverage. Pfizer has a patient assistance program that was a Godsend! You do not have to be at poverty level to qualify. They are actually quite broad on the qualifying income level. We paid only $100 per month after their assist...

When my husband was on Sutent in 2012, it was over $9000 USD for 39 days of 50mg. Ee could never have afforded this even with our private insurance coverage. Pfizer has a patient assistance program that was a Godsend! You do not have to be at poverty level to qualify. We paid only $100 per month. Here is the google search link about the program, forms, etc. Your doctor will have to sign off on the paperwork to su...

Thanks Charlottesc. I was shocked also, as was the insurance broker that we'd consulted for many years. He and I see no recourse until the Affordable Care Act is actually active in California. I shouldn't have any problems qualifying after Jan 2014.

Certainly feels like one.... yup, if not, I, too, will be mighty pissed and have a few choice words at the pearly gates! Hopefully, I'll still be allowed in.

Thank you for your kind words SarahGrey. You're so right... as if things are difficult enough. I'm not sure if possible state laws in Calif don't address this or how/why it was possible for them to handle it this way. There was no time lapse in coverage. My then current policy was due to expire 12/31/12 at midnight. I had gone for my annual gyn and mammo in early Dec showing no change in size, etc of the fibroids....

Not sure that always is the case SarahGrey. We had Blue Shield California for 6 or 7 years through our small company, DH was DX with kidney cancer 5/2010 and after he died last year they let me finish the year contract but it couldn't continue as such because it was a sm biz plan for 2-50 employess and it was just us two. January 2013 I re-applied with Blue Shield California for a private plan, made it clear that I h...

Please keep in mind that most drug manufacturing companies have patient assistance programs in place. You do not have to be at poverty level to qualify. My husband's onc office did the paperwork with Pfiser (sp) and he qualified for them to cover the balance after insurance for the OOP cost of sutent. HLH

My husband had left over Affinitor and his oncologist's office was happy that I asked if they could use it for another patient. I dropped off about 18 pills in unopened blister packs. Have you checked with hers?

                      About dezigner1

                      Kidney Cancer

My husband was diagnosed in May 2010 with RCC. Left radical nephrectomy in July 2010 with lung mets showing on CT scans. Brain tumor discovered via MRI in October 2011 followed by Cyberknife 2 weeks later. CT scans at that time also show new mets to liver, adrenal glands and lymph nodes. 2 cycles of Sutent beginning Jan 2012, but scan at the end of March showed one liver met doubled to 9cm so DR has stopped sutent and started with Afinitor 10 mg today.
