Jeana, Thank you for the information.  I will look into it.  Right now I will be taking Bob to see the ENT who was referred to us by our pulmologist because he has some sores in his mouth.  Hope it is only from dry mouth, he has been cancer free since 2002.  He was just told that a sore on his arm is squamous cell and a sore on his nose is precancerous.  Will have them taken care of next wee...

Hi Carol, Sorry to hear about your husband.  My husband is a cancer survivor (scc of tongue and floor of mouth 2002).  He has had problems with effects of radiation.  In 2005 his jaw broke while he was eatting a sandwich and they tried replacing, didn't work.  He was still eating until Jan 2010 when we found out that the fevers and chills he had been experiencing since 2007 were the results of hi...

Hi Susan, Please let us know how your dilation goes.  Bob & I are going to see his pulmologist on Tuesday and discuss whether he thinks dilation is something Bob needs.  Also going to ask him if he has any suggestions.  Take care.  I hope things improve for your parents.  Bob is also a stroke survivor so we know some of the things your father is going through.  Will keep you all in ...

Hi Morgand117  Thanks for your information.  Did you just have swallowing problems or were you also on a peg tube?  Can you now eat regular food?  How did it feel when they were doing the VitalStim.  Did they also have you swallowing anything during these excercises.  I worry about that because of Bob aspirating.  Seeing his pulmologist on Tuesday and will discuss this option with h...

Hi Tony, Just wondering how your hernia surgery went, okay we hope.  With us all working on this phlegm problem maybe we will find a solution.  Were you able to find the little oral sponges?  Been swabbing Bob's mouth with Listerine in the morning after cleaning and at night before he goes to bed.  Hoping it will get rid of a lot of the bacteria in his mouth.  Take care. Paulette & Bob...

Hi Susan, It's Paulette & Bob.  He's been on Glucerna 1.2 since Jan 2010 and has been doing good.  They put him on 6 cans and after a while he started to gain too much weight and so they cut it down to 5.  After he started having the aspiration pneumonia they changed him to Glucerna 1.5 so that he could still have the proper amount of calories but not have to take as much.  He still gets 5 ca...

Hi Redvette, We're so glad to hear the great news about your husband.  I am looking into Vital Stim but do not know anything about dilations of the esophagus.  Don't know if Bob needs anything like that.  The only thing we were ever told was that his epiglottis doesn't close.  Who suggested the dilations?  We do not see the ENT that did his surgery since we have moved from Indiana to Arizoni...

Hi Susan, I called the hospital near us that uses Vital Stim and talked to the speech therapist.  He said I need to get an order from our doctor for a dysphisia evaluation and treatment.  I asked him if he could use results from a barium swallowing test that Bob had done about a year ago before they put in the peg tube.  He said he thought he could.  Also told him Bob had some kind of test to see...

Thank you for your reply.  I am going to call the hospital today and see if I can get more info on the "Vital Stim Therapy".  Did they do any tests like barium swallow to see if the therapy helped his epiglottis close?  Also did the doctors give you any tips on how to prevent aspiration?  I watch him like a hawk for the first signs of congestion or fever.  Also have a stethoscope to listen to...

Hi, Thought I'd put our message in this catagory also.  My husband is a cancer survivor from 2002.  His treatment has left him with an epiglottis that does not close so he is on a peg tube since Jan 2010.  He is getting aspiration pneumonia quite frequently from swallowing his saliva.  He takes nothing by mouth.  Am trying to find a treatment that would address his epiglottis problem.  ...
