I am still suffering reprocussions from this toxicity after receiving 1 dose in April. I have just been declared disabled by social security and rated as improvement not expected. The fatique was (is) horrid and I was nearly bedridden most of the time. I am now going through extensive physical therapy because my muscles broke down. My arthritis came on with a vengence. I am lucky to be alive as well but had to give up my job of 24 years. I am now basically handicapped. I had severe systemic toxicity to 5Fu cream chemo. Please feel free to contact me at marianneavery@msn.com

I just started a medication which used to be used for depression. They have found small doses of it helps. It seems to be working somewhat for me after about 1 week of use.

I have had the same issue after only 1 dose of 5fu chemo cream. I went in to full sytemic toxicity.

Suffering from horrific side effects after applying Efudex for two days has led me to search for an antidote. I found this and I hope to spread the news. They even have a hotline for emergencies thats running 24/7.

Thank you so so so much for this information. I had one dose of 5fu chemo for a vaginal pre-cancer and it almost killed me. I have been off work since April and have all sort of delayed issues. I am calling them right now!!!

I haven't used it since the end of April but still keep getting sicker. We thought it would be out of my system but it doesn't seem to go away. My joints are deteriorating, I am in constant pain in all different places, have all the toxicity symptoms in cycles and have only been able to work a few hrs. since then. I have extreme fatigue and somedays I swear I am close to death. Has anyone been through anything like this? I was like supewoman before this happened. We do believe I have the enzyme deficiency but my Dr. was totally unaware of any side effects with the drug even, before I had them,so she hasn't been the best source of information. I am going to go to the University of Iowa's cancer center to see what they can do.

I had one treatment of 5fu creme chemo for a vag. pre-cancer. I almost immediately went into total systemic toxicity. I have been sick and off work since April. I was healthy and working 60 hr. wks. prior to this. Now I can barely get up during the day and each day brings a new complication. Does anyone know how to get rid of the toxicity? It is already mid-Sept. and I feel worse, not better.

was diagnosed with breast cancer and received my first dose of 5 FU on July 15th, 11 days later I was admitted to the hospital due to severe toxic reaction to the 5 FU, I was diagnosed with grade 4 (4 being the most severe level) - grade 4 leukopenia, thrombocytopemia, stomasitis, mucocitis, and diarrhea. I was in the hospital for 13-days, do not remember anything of the first week. My family was told I may not make it and supportive care was offered. Needless to say I did make it, however 4-weeks later I am still unable to what I had done prior to chemo due to fatigue. I was informed following this episode that it is very rare and they had never seen this type of reaction, and that I apparently had a deficiency in an enzyme called DPD which makes my body unable to metabolize the 5FU. Upon further research I found that approx. less than 5% of the population has this deficiency and those that do have had toxic reactions to 5FU, including death. I also found out there is a test for this enzyme, but was told by my oncologist it is not the standard of practice to test for DPD? I do highly recommed anyone who is about to recieve 5FU discuss with your physician the effects of DPD and 5FU, the odds are in your favor you will not have this deficiency since less than 5% of the population does, but I can assure you if you are in that 5% you do not want to have 5FU, I am truely very lucky to be alive today. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has had or knows someone who has had this reaction to 5FU.

I know what she feels like! I have been so sick with toxicity from this drug! What is worse is that I only took it for a pre-cancer! I feel like I am barely alive somedays! Please email me at
