Both of these drugs are immunotherapy drugs. Traditionally cancer is fought with chemotherapy, which essentially is a poison that kills the cancer cells...but also kills the good cells (which is why people lose weight, hair, are nauseous, etc.). The reason cancer is undetected in the body (unlike a virus where the immune system startst to fight it immediately) is because cancer cells have a protein on them which mak...

Does he qualify for Opdivo, the immunotherapy drug now being used for non-small Cell and are the TV commercials you see. It won't be a cure but could buy time. Immunotherapy is really showing promise in all areas of cancer treatment. While it wasn't helpful for my mom I feel we will see it do amazing things in the fight against cancer in the future.

Hi there, Not to be Debbie Downer but this article relates to using Vitamin C with glioblastomas and NON small cell lung cancer, not Small cell lung cancer. They are very different. My mom just died in February from small cell...many people get confused between this and non-small cell. And my dad died of a glioblastoma in 1987. This article also states vitamin c being used in conjunction with chemo and radiatio...

Hi there, First I am sorry to hear your husband has been diagnosed with cancer. My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer so I understand completely how you must be feeling. In my mom's case, 3 months before her diagnosis, she had a chest xray which came back clear. Then three months later, after having a persistent pain in her right rib cage, they found a 6cm mass in her lung. Upon further testing, it had a...

I live in the US. Per her oncologist, Opdivo was just allowed for SCLC about 4 weeks ago. He said while it has not been FDA approved, it has been approved through the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (www.nccn.org), which is what insurances look at and therefore it is covered by insurance. The oncologist logged into this network and pulled it up and showed me where it was now on the list for treatments for SCLC...

Is anyone out there with small cell lung cancer on Opdivo yet? My mother has SCLC (stage 4 at diagnosis April 2015). Has done three lines of chemo (carboplatin, cisplatin, etoposide, irinotecan, taxotere). I moved her to live with me and the new oncologist just said Opdivo was recently approved to use for SCLC (like 4 weeks ago). So she'll have her first treatment tomorrow. I'm curious if anyone else out there with S...

First, I am sorry to hear of your mother's diagnosis.  It's hard to say how long as everyone is different. My mom was diagnosed with extensive stage small cell lung cancer in April 2015 (lung-primary which had spread to liver, lymph nodes and bones by time of diagnosis). Did chemo and went into remission in August 2015. In January 2016 had a TIA (mini stroke) and found 50+ tumors in her brain. Did Whole Brain R...

My 73 yr old mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 SCLC (lung, liver, lymph nodes, bones) in March 2015. Did 6 rounds of chemo initially which put it into remission in August 2015. She had absolutely no side effects from the first round. Was done three days in a row, then off a week, then repeated cycle. In Jan 2016 she had a mini stroke to find it had returned in her brain. She did Whole Brain Radiation Therapy and to d...

My thoughts are with you both. I thought I'd update my mom's situation. She completed all 6 rounds of chemo two weeks ago, had her 3rd scan a week ago and got those results today. The first scan had shown a 30-50% decrease in the cancer in all areas, and the second showed more decrease, although not as much. But the lymph nodes were undetectable and the other spots to like a 0.3-0.5 cm measurement. This third scan ...

I just joined too. My mom (72) was diagnosed March 2015 with stage 4 SCLC. Scans showed a 6cm mass in lung, also in liver, lymph nodes and bones. In Dec 2014 there were no signs of it (had chest xray and blood work for knee surgery which were all clear). She was a smoker for 30 years (smoked a pack a day) but hasn't in 10 years. She's just completed her 4th round of chemo (will have 6 total; each round is 3 days wit...
