I have just been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma with tonsil involvement.  It has a HPV-16 marker.  No biopsy on the the lymph node but it lit up on the Petscan.

The doctor has given me two options:   Operation and Radiation or No operation and Radiation and Chemotherapy.

Operation would involve disection of the lymph node and require a 5 day hospital stay.

I do not know how to make this decision.

Any Advice?

Also has anyoe had any experience with Proton therapy instead of radiation?

I am a 47 year old female and I was just diagnosed with Stage IV Squamous Cell Carcinoma in my voice box and lymp nodes.  My first option was surgery, where they remove my voice box including vocal cords and I would never speak again and I just wasn't ready for that, so we are going with radiation and chemo.  I go in for fitting of my mask for radiation on the 12th and on the 13th, I will be admitted to the hospital for my port, feeding tube and first chemo treatment.  I am scared to death.  I have two daughters, 16 and 11.  My 16 year old is disconnecting herself from me and has talked to me pretty bad since my diagnosis.  It's like she has given up.  My 11 year old won't talk about it.  I also take care of my 76 year old mom, so it's getting pretty hard, because I work nights and have to travel everyday to Dr's appts that are an hour away.  I'm already exhausted and haven't even gotten started good.  I guess my question is how do y'all cope?  I pray a lot and I still can't believe I went from being active with my girls to a feeding tube and port and by the way the Drs are talking, never enjoying food again.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I go for mine on the 12th and I am scared the same will happen to me too.  I pray it gets easier for you.  I just don't think I can stand that on my face and be able to breathe.  Please pray for me as well.  Wish I could help you.

I was just diagnosed with throat cancer and I have to start radiation and chemo and people keep refering to radiation as cooking.  It that what it does?  Cooks you!!  I've heard that and I am terrified.  Is there anything good about it, besides getting rid of the tumors?  Thanks and God bless you.

I was just diagnosed with Saquamous Cell Carcinoma on my voice box, and lymp nodes in my neck and chest.  I am a single mother with two daughters, 11 and 16,  I am terrified!  I think I am supposed to start radiation and chemotherapy this week.  He said it's going to be a long, hard road and it was going to kick my butt.  He first wanted to do surgery, and if he did, I would never talk again and I would have a hole in the front of my neck.  I am 47 and I'm just not ready for my voice to be taken away, not to mention the hole in the throat.  I am so sorry for your diagnosis.   I pray you are able to taste food better.  I was just wandering if you or anyone could tell me what radiation and chemo are going to be like.  I keep looking in the wrong places I guess.  Thanks for your time.

I'm so sorry to hear about your recent dianosis.  I, myself, was just diagnosed with Squamaous Cell Carcinoma on my voice box, and the lymp nodes in my neck and chest.  My first option was surgery and I would never speak again, so I asked what was behind door #2, because I didn't like the sound of that.  I am a 47 year old, single mother of two beautiful daughters, 16 and 11.  They also told me they found 5 spots on my liver and after another 4-phase CT scan, he said, I don't know what to tell you, but it's gone.  He and I both looked at the spots on the pet scan.  All I can say is prayer works.  The reason I'm on here, is I was wondering about the radiation and chemo.  I've never been through anything like this before and going through it alone is pretty terrifying.  I just wanted to know if you maybe could let me know what I was in for.  I don't know anything about radiation or chemo and was hoping someone that has went through it, could help me.  Thanks for you time and again, I will be praying for you.
